2021.12.05 08:59 Unlucky-Nobody 39 and just diagnosed with lung cancer
I found a swollen lymph node in my neck a few weeks ago and the doc sent me straight for a biopsy and blood tests. CT scan showed it's in my right lung in the same spot I had a previous nasty chest infection that I thought I had beat (MAC pneumonia) Now I'm waiting on more test results and scans and I'm freaking out.
I feel lost and scared.

2021.12.05 08:59 BATMAN0811 The time I made a howitzer do parkour. Parkour!
When I got to the fleet in '99 they immediately made me start the "incidental driver" pipeline. That meant HMMWV license, 5ton license, then 5ton with howitzer license. We did a UDP at the end of that year to Oki, so that meant I got to drive an American 5ton truck, pulling a howitzer, on tiny ass Japanese roads for 6 months.
Okay, okay. I know what you're going to say. "A UDP story? Lame." Well, suck it. That's what a deployment looked like in '99, and Oki was pretty nuts back then. There was the Banana Show, and Y2K was right around the corner. It was a stressful time.
Anyway, like I said, I was forward-deployed as the tip of the artillery-cannoneer spear in Oki. We ended up going over to the mainland to blow craters in/set fires on the Japanese national symbol-of-power, Mt. Fuji. The roads around Fuji were just as bad as Oki, if not worse. There was less than 6" of total clearance in most traffic lanes and there was a giant, concrete rain ditch along the side of all the roads. It was impossible to make 80% of the turns without using two lanes. Guys hit stuff all the time, houses, cars, streetlamps, et cetera.
Due to my overwhelming sense of duty and esprit de corps I had managed to get along without hitting anything... until we decided to go train on the north side of the sacred mountain. That meant that we had to drive off base, down the side of a mountain, and make a particularly precarious left-hand turn. Remember, we were driving on the left side of the road, so a left turn is like making a right turn here in the States. When you're pulling a trailer you have to "swing it out wide" so you don't clip the inside corner.
Like I said earlier, the trucks were just too big for the roads, and then there were the rain ditches. Well this left turn was extra-precarious because there were houses on both sides of the main-street, and the side-street, and they were very close to the roadway. And we shot the old m198 that travelled with the tube hanging out, like men, so you always had to think about where your phallus was swinging when you turned the 5ton. And on top of all of that, the inside corner of the turn had a 3-foot-high retaining wall immediately on the other side of the rain ditch. So it was, from right to left: narrow road, 18" deep x 12" wide rain ditch, 3-foot wall, tiny little front yard, house.
I was the third howitzer in line to make the turn, so I got to see two other guys go first. The first guy swung it out way too wide, so that when he turned left, his tube almost hit the house on the right side of the main street. It only missed by an inch or two. The second guy took a good line but overcorrected on the side street. He nearly hit the houses on the right side there. I followed the line that the second guy took, determined to make an easier correction than him. And that's when I saw why he overcorrected. There was a little, white car, driven by a man with no fear of death, who was clearly late for an appointment, and he was exactly where my 5ton was pointed. My Vietnam-era 5ton, with its Vietnam-era brakes, pulling my Vietnam-era howitzer with its Vietnam-era no-brakes, all held together by a broken 2-cent cotter pin which was known to fall out, while driving down the side of a mountain.
So I slammed on the brakes and jerked the wheel to the left as fast as I could. The car was so small that I couldn't see it past my own hood, almost immediately. I have no idea how much I missed him by. It was pants-shittingly close. But I had screwed my line all up, and still had to try to control the howitzer. I kept the wheel turned left so the tube would "follow" my line instead of jerking right and forcing my tube into the house that the first guy almost hit. I drove hard left until my front tire was almost in the ditch on the side street and my rear tire was overhanging it. That meant that I dragged the howitzer right across the ditch and into the retaining wall that ran parallel to the side street. The howitzer ramped up the wall and ran at a 45-degree angle, with one tire still on the street, and one in some old dude's front yard. My tire hit some planter and sent shit flying everywhere, including AT the old man who was standing there. Then, as I corrected, and the howitzer ran back down the wall, to the street, and the tube nearly hit the old man. Then the tire landed in the ditch again, bounced the whole truck again, and finally came to a roll alongside its partner on the street.
Of course, I didn't see any of that stuff with the howitzer. My gun crew--who I had been flinging all over the back of the 5ton--filled me in later. I was busy white-knuckling the steering wheel and explaining what happened to my section chief. He was kicked back and never saw the car that I almost crushed. Amazingly, the only thing that was damaged was the old man's planter, and probably his pride.
Anyway, I'm up before 7 on a Sunday and I'm trying not to wake up the wife and dog. They will both have shit for me to do that I do not want to do. So you bastards get this because typing is quiet. Feel free to share your "war" stories. Semper Fi.

2021.12.05 08:59 ziggystarz9339 Boss stole 100$ from my waitress.
Rant/ story time/this just happened
So I work in a bar as a bar tender in a small town type of bar. (That's alot of bar in one sentence) and I've been working in the industry for awhile now.
Anyway yesterday my boss told me my tills have been short for the past two weeks. Some times a couple bucks one time close to 40. Which I found strange because I know for a fact I've been ringing my till correctly. So today he asked me to make sure that I rang everything in correctly and before it leaves the bar. So I took extra care.
this morning me and the waitress are counting are tip and we madw decent little amount, she made just over 100 which was nice.
Boss comes out right away and says she needs to pay her float out. Too which I replied, "She cannot pay her float out, we did more in card transactions then cash transactions today. We take our card tips right at point of sale like you've told us to do."
It took me 15 minutes trying to explain when it all clicked. He forgot how to do cash out (which I doubt). I had to tell him that since we take card tips at point of sale on the days where the house would traditionally owe the servers we would just have a short float. But he was dead set that no matter what the float and till had to be even. And he scoff at the idea that some days it would be Even, and some we would owe the house and some the house would owe us. But I know (well have a feeling he's lying) he is lying because the day staff get tipped out after the fact as they don't take there tips at point of sale.
Long story short me and the waitress walked out and the offsale might walk too.

2021.12.05 08:59 Yohan_monster Focus on Moiraine and Lan in the show.
I have read so many non-book readers say that Moiraine and Lan are their favourite characters. Along with Egwene and Nyneave (not saying they shouldn't be, the wonder girls are important). But many just don't care about the 3 boys. And this is huge.
Many people who liked the warder scenes from last episode have been saying that it was not a waste of time as it helped develop Moiraine and Lan. But what they fail to understand is that this development is coming at the expense of other more important characters, especially the 3 boys.
Moiraine and Lan's character 'development' should not be the focus of the story, they are mentor characters they are supposed to be fully developed from the beginning. Lan does go from being a mentor character to Rand to being a side character for Nyneave. But whatever character evolution he has to go through should take place with her and that too subtly along with the development of their relationship, which takes many seasons.
Mentor characters like them are present in every fantasy story. Imagine if the books and adaptations focused on developing Gandalf, Dumbledore, obi one, as characters rather than focusing on the main protagonists, people wouldn't have care about those protagonists either.
